Arnside WI was founded in 1919. Arnside Knott WI was founded in 1980. The two WI's amalgamated in 2013 to become Arnside and Arnside Knott WI. This year, 2019, we are celebrating 100 years of the WI in Arnside. Events will be held throughout the year to mark this very special occasion.

2nd March 2019

An afternoon tea party, to celebrate our 100th birthday, was held in the Arnside WI and Village Hall.

Tim Farron M.P. and his wife, Rosie, joined the ladies of Arnside and Arnside Knott WI to celebrate their centenary. Entertainment was provided by Rachel Mercer who sang her way through the century with at least one song from each decade.

Thank you to Keith Nunn who played music for us on his keyboard throughout the afternoon.

Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by over 80 members of the Women's Institute including Mrs Karen Hanks, President of the Federation of Cumbria and Westmorland WI and Mrs Olive Clark, Honorary President of the Federation, who also gave a short speech.

Tim Farron gave the toast, speaking of the importance of fellowship and friendship that the WI has provided in Arnside for 100 years.

Our Celebration Fun Day was a great success. The Milli Choir gave us a wonderful half hour of songs, well sung by all.We hope they enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed their singing.

We were blessed with a beautiful warm sunny day, so the children (and adults) had great fun playing outside in our garden, where we had a bouncy castle and slide. Not to mention giant jenga and other games. There was also a lot of fun and games going on indoors, tombolas, raffle, treasure hunt, dressing up, face painting and glitter tattoos, biscuit decorating, and much more. Refreshments were served all afternoon. A big thank you to all our WI members who worked so hard to make the day so enjoyable.

Pam Thompson sent a card to Her Majesty the Queen telling her about our 100th Anniversary Celebrations. Pam included photographs and references to the Queen's and also Prince Philip's connections to Arnside over the years.

Here is a copy of the reply we received.

Special Publication

A special 60 page publication has been produced to commemorate  the Centenary.

Many thanks to Sheila Bates for all her hard work collecting and collating archive material.

Many thanks, also, to all members who have contributed photographs or shared their memories and stories. The result is a fascinating record of WI life over the past 100 years.

Tree Planting.jpg

4th March 2020

Today this lovely Acer tree has been planted in the gardens

opposite Londis, in celebration of a 100 years of WI in Arnside.

Planting a tree was one of many suggestions made by the late Pat Taylor. Her husband, Bob, helped with the planting.
